Many of my students have shoulder or wrist injuries right now. They are not able to bear any weight on their arms or hands without pain and are tempted to just give up practicing yoga for a while, or else do it anyway and suffer through the pain.
I can sympathize. I’ve had both of these types of injuries myself and it’s easy to get discouraged when you can’t do the things you like to do. So to encourage my students last week, I taught a class I called “Look Ma, No Hands!” Instead of focusing on all the things these students had to skip, we concentrated on challenging the lower body to make it stronger. We flamingoed, curtsied, and did roly-polys. We got our legs to burn alternating between Humble Warrior and Exalted Warrior (or as I mistakenly called it at one point, “Exhausted Warrior.”) It was challenging and engaging and, best of all, a lot of fun!
So next time a part of your body needs a rest, don’t get depressed. Get busy!
