Equanimity at the Equinox

It’s officially Spring! The vernal equinox on March 20th ushered in the new season with an equal amount of daylight and nighttime.

This balance of opposites, light and dark, is similar to the opposing forces brought together in the practice of hatha yoga. Energy-boosting poses are juxtaposed with energy-calming poses. The sum of this pairing is often that wonderful sense of well-being and connectedness to the world around you.

This week, Yoga Libre students honored the equinox by doing energy-boosting poses for the first half of class. We then shifted to energy-calming poses for the last half. The result? Calm but energized students floated out after class. There were smiles and contented sighs. It appeared as if a good time was had by all.

Remember, as a yoga practitioner, you already have the skills to ramp up your energy if you’re feeling sluggish. Or you can quiet yourself if you’re anxious or overstimulated. Equanimity isn’t something you force, but it can be the effect of a balanced practice.

Hope you enjoy some peace in this new season, and beyond.
